Taking Pride in Our Work

The Los Angeles Times reported this week that a Newport Beach-based plastic surgeon is facing legal charges for allegedly performing more cosmetic procedures on a patient during a rhinoplasty than were agreed upon by both parties. In doing so, the doctor in question was able to bill his patient's insurance company an additional $40,000 in medical expenses. The lawsuit, first filed in 2010, is taking a significant developmental step forward next month when the surgeon is expected to be arraigned in court.

When you make the decision to undergo a rhinoplasty in Beverly Hills, do you have confidence that your doctor will treat your body—and financial status—with respect and dignity? Looking Foxy

If you've looked at the current issue of The Economist, or listen to the outstanding public radio science program, Radiolab, then you might have heard of a an absolutely fascinating story about the relationship between beauty, personality and friendly foxes.

Now, you don't have to be one of Southern California's best plastic surgeons to know that a person or animal who looks nice won't necessarily act nice, and a person or animal who looks less attractive might be well be the biggest sweetheart on the planet. We all know that we shouldn't judge the proverbial book by its cover but, of course, most of us still do. Indeed, most of us assume intellectually that appearance and personality are completely unrelated matters, even if we find ourselves routinely favoring the attractive over the unattractive and having strong feelings about plastic surgery before and after
pictures.

Well, a study that began way back in 1959 -- one that won't make geneticist Dmitry Belyaev any friends among the animal rights community -- tells us otherwise. In an attempt to breed foxes that were easier to raise (and kill) for their fur, Belyaev starting breeding foxes who were more dog-like, less afraid of the humans who were raising them (and killing them) and less agressive. The more aggressive foxes became coats.

As if transformed by the finest board certified plastic surgeons, the friendlier foxes appearance changed, as per The Economist...
...the animals’ coats developed patches of colour; their ears became floppy; their skulls became rounded and foreshortened; their faces flattened; their noses got stubbier; and their jaws shortened, thus crowding their teeth.
The really fascinating part is that all these changes not only make the foxes look somewhat cuter to us, they also appear to  roughly parallel what makes us humans more attractive to each other.

Fortunately, unlike these less than fortunate foxes, people don't have to wait for generations of selective breeding to become more attractive. For more information on what the outstanding plastic surgeons of We Know Beauty can do for you, please call us at 310-300-1500.

Embrace Your Choices

It seems that Hollywood is awash with rumors about famous celebrities and whether they have had plastic surgery or not. Jennifer Lopez is making headlines this week after taking to Twitter to defend herself against accusations from a London-based plastic surgeon, who posted suggestive plastic surgery before and after pictures of her online. Reporters took note when Renee Zellweger recently appeared at the screening of a film in Burbank, postulating that perhaps she, too, had gone under the knife. And of course, Hollywood starlet Heidi Montag (made famous for her role on The Hills), has drawn increased attention lately for having breast reduction surgery after her previous procedure had given rise to health problems.

There's nothing inherently right or wrong with the choice to have (or not have) plastic surgery. When done for the right reasons, plastic surgery can correct perceived cosmetic imperfections that have triggered real insecurities for the patient. Whatever the case, we want to know: why all the defensiveness on the part of these stars? The reactions on the part of those who are quick to deny they've had surgery implies there's something wrong with plastic surgery in the first place. There isn't. We think it's better to make an informed, healthy decision, and then embrace it fully.

The choice to have plastic surgery is life-changing. It should be made in consultation with board certified professional plastic surgeons. Cosmetic surgery isn't for everyone, and there are health risks associated with any procedure. If you are interested in learning more about the benefits and drawbacks associated with undergoing a cosmetic surgical procedure, call the top plastic surgeons at We Know Beauty today.

Tummy Tucks: Yes, Men Get Them Too!

Of all the plastic and cosmetic procedures performed at We Know Beauty, a notable minority are performed on men. In fact, procedures for men are on the rise year after year, according to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), who estimates that men account for 25 percent of new plastic surgery patients. In 2011, ASAPS reported that men had nearly 800,000 cosmetic procedures, which accounted for 9% of all procedures carried out by ASAPS doctors that year. While that may not sound like much, it's a 121% increase from the total number of men who underwent plastic surgery in 1997!

Men who come to We Know Beauty  often benefit from the same procedures offered to women, but with the masculine approach. Men usually choose cosmetic procedures such as rhinoplasty, liposuction, eyelid surgery, and male breast reduction. However, some may be surprised to learn that that includes a tummy tuck in Beverly Hills. Most often utilized for men who have lost significant weight upwards of 100 pounds, men who are most likely to benefit from a tummy tuck have undergone bariatric surgery.

At We Know Beauty, we cater to patients of all ages and backgrounds, including gender. We believe that successful bariatric surgery patients often benefit from a tummy tuck to make their abdomen tauter and smooth out the skin that has become loose from losing so much weight.
