What is "Real Beauty" Anyway?

As board certified plastic surgeons who are involved with people's appearance on a daily basis, we've had to give standards of beauty a great deal of thought. While traditional standards of attractiveness for both women and men have, in fact, been under the microscope for decades now, the debut of the Dove "Real Beauty" advertising campaign some ten years ago has given far more people food for thought about what we all regard as beauty and who decides what is beautiful.

This charming video, apparently a shorter version of a longer film debuting at Sundance this year, is a good example of this now 10 year-old campaign's approach: So, has this campaign made a difference? We don't really know but, as our patients explore the best of our plastic surgery before and after pictures, we've noticed a subtle change in recent years. Fewer women are trying to look like that absolutely perfect looking film star or supermodel and more are, it appears, simply wanting to look like the best version of themselves that they can imagine. Indeed, in our opinion, the very best plastic surgeons are the ones who are most talented at bringing out the very real beauty that all of us possess.
